Focus Verse

Psalm 25:2 O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me. (KJV)

Jump Start

Don’t worry. You can trust me. But can you really?

Trust can be a very scary thing at times. When you fully trust someone, you believe what they say is true and that they will do what they promise. They are not going to let you down, hurt you, or let you hurt yourself.

As a child, the people we trust the most in the world are our parents. We believe that they love us and have our best interest in mind. When it comes to our Heavenly Father, He has given us his Word through the Bible. What He says, He will do.

Trust is an important part of today’s story entitled, “Trusting Dad.” Lily discovers that her dad’s trust in her to do something that frightens her gives her the confidence to succeed. She believes he will be right by her side so she will not come to harm.

Today's Devotion

Lily’s dad pushed her bike out of the garage and rolled it up to her. He put the kickstand down and pointed to the back tires.  “Look, no training wheels.”

Lily snapped on her bike helmet.  “Are you sure about this, Dad?  What if I fall?”

“You’re not going to fall. I won’t let you.”

She gave him that usual grimaced look when she was not sure about something.

“Trust me, Lily-pad, I think you’re ready. You’re going to be great. I’m going to be right there beside you,” Dad said.

“Oh-kaaaay,” Lily said, drawing out the word with hesitation. She straddled the bike seat and gripped the handles. “Here goes nothing.”

Her father grabbed the center of the handlebars.  “Now, here’s how it’s going to work.  I’m going to run beside you while you peddle. When you get enough speed, I’m going to let you go.  Don’t forget, to stop, you just slowly peddle backwards. You ready?”

Lily took a deep breath.  “Peddle backwards to stop. Okay, I think I’ve got it.”  She kicked up the kickstand and pushed down hard against the pedals. The front wheel wobbled back and forth as she worked to find her balance.

Dad held on loosely to the back of the seat. “You got it, girl. You can do this.” He let go and Lily kept going. She giggled out loud. “I’m doing it!”

“You’re doing great! When you get to Mrs. Limpkins’ house, stop and turn around.

As she biked straight as an arrow down the sidewalk to Mrs. Limpkin’s driveway, Lilly felt free. She brought the bike to a stop and pushed it around with one foot on the ground.

“I did it!” she yelled, pumping her arm.

“I told you that you could,” Dad said. “Now, let’s get your mother and we can all ride to the park on our bikes together.”

Wrap Up

David is a great role model of someone putting their trust in God. In times when he felt that God was slow in sending help, David encouraged himself in the Lord by remembering all the times God never let him down.

In the thirteenth psalm, David begins by asking God this question, “How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord?” But by the end, he restates his trust in God’s mercy, and offers Him praise.

Like Lily, sometimes our God takes off the training wheels and lets us ride without help. But we are always in His sight. He will not let us fall.
