“One thousand one. One thousand two. One thousand three. Ready or not, here I come!"Let’s see if you know your Bible. Can you tell me where you’d find the Lost and Found chapter of Scripture? That would be Luke chapter 15. Here, Jesus gives us three parables: the Parable of the Lost Sheep, the Parable of the Lost Coin, and the Parable of the Lost Son, also known as the Parable of the Prodigal Son. In each of these stories, something precious is lost that must be sought.

The shepherd searches for his lost sheep. The woman searches for her lost coin which is part of her wedding dowry. Then, a father waits for the return of his wayward son. In this last parable, the son had to see for himself how much he needed his father before he could make his way home.

This is a great illustration of the importance of prayer. Prayer is our way of seeking our Heavenly Father. If we believe that He is a necessary part of our lives, we will seek Him frequently through our prayers. This is the lesson that Logan learns in today’s story entitled, “Seeking God is Important.”

Today's Devotion

Logan walked into the house with his dad, cradling his scared puppy, Hank, close to his chest.  His mother greeted them at the door.  “You found him!” she exclaimed.

“Yes, ma’am.  Poor thing was hiding out behind Mr. Garrison’s barn,” Logan said.

Dad rubbed the frightened dog’s quivering belly. “We almost didn’t see him with all that black fur, but Logan heard him whimpering from underneath a pile of hay. He must have wandered off there when he saw the gate to the yard opened.”

“That’s my fault,” Logan said. “I’ll make sure the gate is completely closed next time. I got really scared when Hank came up missing.”

“Tomorrow, I’ll install a better latch on the gate,” Dad said.  “That will help, too.”

“Well, I’m glad you found him. You’ve been looking for him for hours,” Mom said.

“Logan, go put Hank in the garage for tonight,” Dad said. “Afterwards, go get washed up. We’re late for family prayer.”

“Family prayer?” Logan whined. “Do we have to tonight? Like Mom said, we’ve been out for hours looking for Hank.  I’m pretty tired.”

“You searched for Hank because he is important to you, right?” Dad asked.

“Of course.” Logan gave the pup a tender squeeze. “He’s the best doggie in the world.”

“Well, prayer is our way of seeking God. We pray because He’s the most important person in our lives.  Everyday, we need to seek God.”

“You’re right,” Logan said. “But do you think Hank can join us? I just want to make sure he doesn’t feel alone.”

“I can agree to that,” Dad said. “After all, that’s how God feels about us. He never wants us to feel alone, especially when we seek Him with all our hearts.”

Wrap Up

David wrote in Psalm 63:1, “Early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land.” Prayer should not be drudgery or done out of duty. To truly seek the Lord means that we want to be near Him. We want to have a personal relationship with our Creator.

God does not play hide and seek. In other words, He does not hide when we seek Him. Paul said in Acts 17:27, God wants humankind to seek him, reach out for him, and find him. He is not far from any one of us.

Have you prayed today? If not, time to do some God-seeking.
