Focus Verse

Psalm 18:31 For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God? (KJV)

Jump Start

What’s the famous ROCK group with four guys who don't sing? Mount Rushmore. Get it? Because they’re made of “rock” and “rock” can’t sing.

Sorry about that intro. I’ll admit. It was a terrible dad joke, but somewhat related to today’s topic.

Mountain climbing has advanced quite a lot since Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard reached the summit of Mont Blanc in 1786, kicking off modern mountaineering. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it had developed into a sport in its own right, resulting in greater and more demanding challenges.

Besides the tough, nylon ropes climbers use to scale the heights of lofty mountain ranges, metal anchors known as pitons, cams, and similar devices provide added protection from falls for many courageous climbers. The right gear and the right training are essential for an activity as hazardous as mountaineering.

In today’s story, “God Will Hold You Up,” Jackson learns that anchors and a sturdy foundation are just as important in our walk with God. God is our Rock. When we hold fast to Him, He never lets us fall.

Today's Devotion

While watching a documentary with his parents, Jackson’s heart raced as a group of climbers scaled the side of a mountain hundreds of feet above the ground, held aloft by rappelling equipment.

At one point, one of the climber’s feet hit loose rocks, causing him to lose his balance. He was caught midfall by his equipment. Jackson fell back against the couch, clutching his chest. “I don’t know if I can watch this.” He covered his eyes. “Why would anyone do this?  They’re crazy.”

“They put a lot of trust in their climbing gear, that’s for sure,” Mom said.

“Just a little too much trust, if you ask me,” Jackson returned.

“Think about it, though,” Dad said. “These people put so much faith in their equipment, that they have no fear of falling.  Does this remind you of anything?”

“Are you talking about having faith in God?” Jackson asked.

“Precisely. These climbers not only trust in their equipment, but they also put a lot of confidence in the strength of the rock their equipment is anchored to. We can trust in God’s word like they do their climbing gear because it’s backed by a God who cannot fail.”

“Just to add to this,” Mom said. “These climbers test their equipment to make sure it can hold them. Every time we test God’s word, it proves true.”

Jackson glanced back at the screen just in time to see the climbers reach the peak of the summit. “There’s one thing for sure,” he said.  “If I had to do this, my faith would be off the charts. That’s because I’d be praying the whole time I was climbing.”

Wrap Up

In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches about two builders – one wise, one foolish. The wise builder built his house on the rock. The foolish builder built his house on the sand. When the storm came, the house built on the rock held steadfast. The one set on sand fell down with a great crash.

Our lives are like that house. When we build our lives on Jesus and His teachings, and putting faith in God despite the strength of the storm, He always keeps us from falling.
