Focus Verse

Jump Start

“Not at this intersection, but at the next one, turn right.”

One of the most valuable innovations of the 21st century—especially for someone who is directionally challenged as I am—is the GPS. I use it almost everyday, even for my commute to work. No, I haven’t forgotten how to find my way to the office. I use it to keep me informed about any traffic jams that might be on the way.

Sometimes, I’ve ignored its suggestion to re-route me when there is a road problem. Many times, I have regretted that decision.

The same can be said of a lot of people who have ignored the warning signs that God drops into their spirits. Disregard His gentle leading, and you’re bound to get yourself stuck in the middle of a muddle along the way. This is what our story is about.  

Today's Devotion

In the back seat of their SUV, Mason flicked Michaela’s Minnie Mouse ears headband.

Michaela playfully swatted away her brother’s hand before she straightened her plastic mouse ears.

Dad hopped into the driver’s seat and cranked the ignition. He gave Mom a wink, then stared at the kids through the rearview mirror. “Everybody ready for Disney World?” he asked.

“All set,” Mason said, holding up his electronic tablet, already paused on his favorite video game.

“Let’s go!” Michaela pumped her arm in the air. “I’m ready to ride every ride in the park.”

“Yeah, especially the kiddie rides,” Mason joked.

Mom turned to Mason. “Let’s be nice,” she said.

“Don’t mind him, Mom. He’s just excited to see his twin brother, Goofy.” Michaela pointed at her brother and laughed.

“Okay, you two,” Dad said, fumbling at the GPS controls on the dashboard display. “You heard your mother.”

“Why are you looking up directions, Dad?” Mason asked. “We’ve been there plenty of times.”

“I just want to make sure I avoid any traffic or road construction. This will re-route me if there are any delays.”

“The faster we get there, the better,” Michaela chimed in. “I want to get to the resort before dinner so I can hit the swimming pool.”

“This would make a good lesson for my Sunday school class,” Mom said. “When we tune our ears to heaven and search God’s Word, we are apt to hear God’s gentle voice keeping us on the straight and narrow.”

“The Bible—God’s Positioning System. You know? GPS. God’s Positioning System. Get it?” Mason remarked.

“That’s clever, Mason,” Mom said. “I think that will be my lesson’s title.”

“Well, would you look at that. Goofy’s twin has a brain after all,” Michaela said.

Wrap Up

Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

In life, we should always measure our decisions by what God’s Word says. It will guide and direct us. God’s Word shows us how to handle any obstacles Life sends our way. Never leave home without it. If you hide it in your heart, you never will.
