Focus Verse

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. (NKJV)

"Whew! Okay hammer. It’s time you did this job on your own. I’m taking a break. Give me a call when you’re done.”

A hammer’s primary job is to nail things together. But it’s silly to ask a hammer to do anything by itself. Tools don’t work that way. They are instruments used by professionals to help them do their jobs. It’s equally as silly to think that we can do anything for God apart from Him. We are instruments in the Master’s hand to do His work upon the earth.

In John 15:5, Jesus said that without Him we can do nothing. We are extensions of God’s grace. Witnesses of His majesty. He works in us, for us, and through us. Today’s devotion illustrates this point.

Today's Devotion

“It’s my week to talk in class,” Avery told her father.

“Oh, is this the series where the students get a little portion of the lesson to teach in Sunday school?”

“Yes, sir. And, I think I have the hardest one.  Everyone has things like faith and loving your neighbor.  My topic is to show how having Jesus on the inside helps us be servants of God.  I’m not even sure what to talk about.”

Her father pointed to his work boots beside the front door.  “Go get my boots, please.”

“Are you going to work, Dad?”  she asked, handing him the boots.

“No, I just wanted to help you with your talk. Here, watch.”  He stared intently at the soiled boots in his hand.  “Go to work, boots!”

Avery laughed.  “Your boots can’t hear you, silly.”

“You’re right. Maybe I should get louder. Get up, you lazy boots, and go make me some money!”  At this point, Avery launched into an outright giggle-fest.

“Why didn’t that work?”

“Because boots are just things, Dad,” Avery replied.

“Good point. Let me try something new.” He slipped the boots onto his feet.  “Now, when I put them on, they become a part of me. I can use them in my job. Without me, they’re just inanimate objects.”

“I’m not sure I understand. What has your boots got to do with the lesson I have to give?”

“Well, Avery, in a way, we’re like these boots.  We can’t perform the work of God without Him on the inside of us helping us do His will. He works through us.”

“Oh, I get it now,” Avery said.  “We need Jesus in our hearts so He can use us to serve Him. There’s only one problem with your lesson, though.”

“What’s that?” Dad asked.

“I can’t take your boots to class.” Avery pinched her nose. “No offense, but they would stink up the whole classroom.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right about that. How about you just take a picture of them instead.”

Wrap Up

Jesus said that apart from Him we can do nothing. Paul said it differently. In Philippians 4:13, he said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” They each said the same thing. We need Jesus in our hearts to do His work. Without His Spirit, we would not be very successful at performing His will.

Do you want to do amazing things for God? If so, allow the Spirit to work in you and through you to accomplish what God wants from you.
