Uh Oh. Was that a stop sign I just went through?
You may not worry too much about driving right now, but this is a good thing to keep in mind when you do. Two out of every ten accidents in the U.S. are caused by distracted drivers. This means they are doing something else instead of focusing on the road, such as: making a call, texting, eating and drinking, reading, using a GPS system, or watching a video.
Some of these are pretty crazy, huh? But drivers, when distracted, run red lights and stop signs or sometimes don’t even see what’s taking place on the road until it’s too late.
We, as Christians, can get distracted too and miss what’s happening in the world around, especially as we get nearer to Christ’s soon return. Paul has something to say about the last days in II Timothy 3:1 through 4:5.
Today's Devotion
Stephen hobbled into the Sunday School class on his new crutches, his right leg was in a cast from his knee down to his foot. He eased into a chair in the back of the room near the door.
Sister Chloe, his teacher, gasped as he came in. “Stephen, what happened? Are you okay?”
“I’m alright,” he said, leaning his crutches against the empty seat next to him. “I had an accident on my 4-wheeler.”
“An accident?” she repeated. “Come on, don’t leave me hanging. Tell me the whole story.”
The room filled with more kids. Stephen noticed that all eyes were on him. As much as he wanted to ignore their questioning glares and Sister Chloe’s pleading gaze, he knew he couldn’t. So he took a deep breath and described the events of his crash.
“My dad just got on this deer lease in West Texas,” he began. “He and I went there to put out feeders and deer stands. We were on our 4-wheelers when I was coming down this hill toward the main road. Just then, a deer came out of the brush. I was so busy watching it that I didn’t see the ‘Bridge Out’ sign. Dad tried to motion me to stop but, before I knew it, I flew over the handlebars, straight into the gully. The 4-wheeler landed right on top of my leg and broke it in three places.”
“Ouch!” Sister Chloe grimaced. “That had to hurt.”
Stephen chuckled slightly. “Well, it didn’t feel good.”
“What happened to you sounds a lot like what I planned to teach about in today’s lesson. I hope you don’t mind if I use your experience as an example.”
Stephen shrugged. “I don’t mind.”
Sister Chloe moved to the front of the room and turned to the class. “We see and hear so much bad news out there that we often ignore it – even get numb to it. But they’re all signs of Christ’s soon return. As Christians, we are to pay close attention to these signs and warn others – like Stephen’s dad tried to warn him before he drove off into the gully. We need to be more careful about what’s ahead.”
Stephen shook one of his crutches over his head. “Amen to that,” he said.
Wrap Up
There are difficult times ahead according to Paul that lets us know that we are living in the last days. Many people will fall deep into sin and some will even teach and preach a message that is far from God’s truth. More so than ever, we need to hold fast to the Word of God and hide the scriptures in our hearts.
Can you name some events that are happening in the world right now that lets you know Jesus is coming soon?
