Focus Verse

Hebrews 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God. (KJV)

Jump Start

"Hey, do you know what it’s all about?"

Do you know the song "Hokey Pokey". Each verse ends by saying, "That's what it's all about." What's it all about? It’s a funny song that gets you moving. But what happens when you turn yourself about? You end up right back where you started ready for another move, right?

Boy, that is a lot of fun singing and acting out. Probably not a good illustration of what you want your walk with God to be, though. You want to keep growing in the faith and getting closer to God. You don’t want to keep ending up where you started. Lots of moving but never growing. God does not want us to live our lives walking in circles.

Today's Devotion

“We’d better get back to camp before our dads freak out that we’ve been gone so long,” Mason said to Logan as he reeled in his fishing line.

“It is getting kind of late,” Logan said, cranking on his fishing rod reel.  “And the fish aren’t biting anyway.  Hope they have something cooked.  I’m starving.”

The boys grabbed their tackle boxes and fishing rods and scaled the steep embankment away from the lake.  At the top, Mason turned side to side.  “Say, do you remember which way we came?”

Logan pointed to the right. “I think we came that way.  That knot in the tree looks familiar.”

“I didn’t notice that before. But okay. Let’s head that way.  It shouldn’t be far to the trail.”

After several minutes of trudging through the thick forest canvas, Mason’s heart began to race. “We should have found the trail by now!  I’m getting worried.”

“Maybe we just haven’t gone far enough,” Logan said.  “It always seems longer on the way back. I’m sure we’re almost to it.”

After nearly a mile hiking through the brush, Logan let out a gasp.  “Oh no!” He pointed to the tree just ahead.  “Isn’t that the tree we left from?”

Mason studied the trunk. The large knot near the base of the tree looked familiar.  “We’ve been going in circles?  What do we do now?”

Logan noticed the lengthening shadows.  The sun sank below the treetops.  “I don’t know, but we need to figure out something fast. It’s going to be dark soon.”

The boys set off in the opposite direction, relieved when they soon spotted the well-worn footpath that led back to camp.

Wrap Up

In the verses leading up to our theme verse, the writer of Hebrews warned about the peril of not progressing in the faith. We can be like babies who are not mature enough for anything but milk. This is a good reminder that if we don’t mature in Christ, then spiritually, we’re going in circles. Never going anywhere.

The closer we get to Jesus, the more we become like Him. The more we become like Him, the more grown-up we are in our faith.

Are you growing closer to Jesus?
