What do you do when you can’t see clearly? You listen.

Scientific studies have shown that the brains of people with vision loss can be “rewired” to enhance other fully functional senses, such as hearing.

Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 5:7 that we walk by faith, not by sight. We can’t always see God at work or know for sure where He is leading us. But, in faith, we obey His Word, knowing that He will never lead us astray. Even when we cannot see what He is doing, we can hear His voice in many different ways.

Today's Devotion

Sophia waited nervously as Sister Mancuso, her Sunday school teacher, covered her eyes with a sheet of cloth. Everything instantly went dark.

“Is the blindfold too tight?” Sister Mancuso asked.

“It’s alright,” Sophia replied.  “I can’t see a thing.”

“Good. You’re going to have to listen for my voice to make it through the maze. I’ve arranged all the chairs in the room into an obstacle course.  I’m going to whisper instructions to you. At the same time, the rest of the students in the class are going to bark out similar instructions meant to throw you off.  You’re going to have to work hard to focus on what I’m saying to you. Got it?”

Sophia nodded her head.

“Alright, let’s begin.” In that instant, the room erupted in pandemonium. The classroom shouted crazy instructions at Sophia.  She could barely hear Sister Mancuso telling her which steps to take.  The more she concentrated on her voice, though, the more the other voices faded.

A minute later, Sister Mancuso told her to stop. “You can take off the blindfold.”

Sophia ripped the blindfold from her eyes, amazed to find that she made it through the maze without tripping over any furniture.

“And that’s how we need to train our spiritual ears to listen only to the voice of God,” Sister Mancuso told the class. “The world will scream at you what they want you to believe or how they expect you to act. But we don’t listen to them. We listen to that still, small voice of God we hear through anointed teaching, Bible reading, and the Holy Spirit speaking in our hearts. Now, who wants to go next?”

Arms shot up around the room.

Wrap Up

When Elijah needed to hear from God, God sent a strong wind, a mighty earthquake, and an intense fire. But God was in none of these. God was in a still, small voice. As humans, we can get easily distracted. There are so many voices in the world telling us what we should eat, what we should buy, what we should think, what we should and shouldn’t say, and what we should believe. We have to train our spiritual ears to concentrate on what God is telling us to do.

“Be still, and know that I am God,” says the Psalmist in Psalms 46:10. This isn’t about following your heart, the latest fad, or listening to so-called experts. It’s about obeying God’s word even when it doesn’t make sense. That’s what walking by faith and not by sight looks like.

There are a lot of voices in this world, but train your ears to listen to God’s voice as it leads you down the right path.
