What goes up must come down. But is that always true?
Isaac Newton, the famous mathematician and physicist from the 17th century, has been credited with the statement, “What goes up must come down.” Newton is the scientist who developed the theory of gravity.
If you have ever seen an object fall to the floor or have even fallen yourself, then you are familiar with the effects of gravity. Gravity is an invisible force that pulls objects toward each other. The mass of the Earth causes that gravitational pull we know so well which is why things fall to the ground.
With enough speed or lift, you can escape the force of gravity. These, and well, if you’re God. You see, Jesus, defied gravity when He ascended to the heavens. We will as well in that great gathering in the sky we call the Rapture. I guess if you created the laws of physics, you could break them, right?
Today's Devotion
The brightly colored hot air balloons rose from a large open field, filling the sky.
Abigail’s dad pointed into the air. “Look at all these balloons. Aren’t they amazing, Abby?”
“They’re really cool,” she replied. Flames shot up from inside the wicker baskets into the opening at the bottom of the balloons. “Why do they use blasts of fire? Aren’t they afraid it’s going to burn up?”
“No, sweetheart,” he replied, chuckling. “There’s a little science to it. By heating the air inside the balloon, it helps it to rise and stay afloat.”
Abigail thought about the time when Jesus rose into the sky in front of His followers. “When Jesus went back up into heaven, did He need fire to do that?”
“He did that all by Himself. I guess when you make the air and all the world around you, you can do that.”
“I wish I could go up into the air like that.”
“One day, we will,” Dad said. “The Bible says that in the rapture, the dead will rise from the grave and those who are alive will go up to meet the Lord in the air.”
“And we’ll go even higher than these balloons?”
“Much, much higher,” her dad replied.
Wrap Up
When Jesus went back up to the heavens many days after His resurrection angels appeared to the group that watched Him go up. They asked, “Why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” This is one of the many promises in the Bible that Jesus will come back.
We may not have the power to rise high into the air without the help of a man-made invention, but one day we will rise to meet Jesus in the sky.
Aren’t you looking forward to that day when you can see Jesus face-to-face?
