Here’s the sound of a car revving its engine [Insert sound]
Here’s what it would sound like if there was no engine to rev [Insert cricket sounds after long, silent delay]
Hmm, I wonder why that didn’t work?
Why do you think the car didn’t make a sound in that last clip? That’s right. You can’t rev up a car that has no engine.
And, yet, people try to be good without a relationship with Jesus. That’s like having a car with no engine. You need the Holy Spirit inside to live a holy and overcoming life. In fact, like engines require fuel and oil to make it work properly, we need Biblical principles by which to govern our lives to make our relationship with God work. Can you imagine trying to live for God without prayer, sound teaching, and God’s word? That would be like a car with no gas. It can’t get you very far.
Today's Devotion
Ethan’s father backed the trailer into their driveway loaded with a vintage 1969 Ford Mustang.
As soon as his father stepped out of the truck to unhook the trailer, Ethan asked for a ride. “Can we take it for a spin, Dad?”
His dad chuckled. “That might be a little tricky, son.”
“Why is that?”
“For starters, it needs a new engine. This one’s blown.”
Ethan dropped his head in disappointment. “But it looks so fast. I was hoping we could take it down to the tracks and you could race it.”
“It does look fast. But looks can be deceiving. Until I can work on it, all we can do is admire it.” Dad ruffled Ethan’s hair. “Maybe you can help me repair it. I could use a handy helper.”
Ethan’s eyes grew wide. “You bet. When can we get started?”
“As soon as the parts I need to order come in,” Dad replied. “Say, you know what this reminds me of? What are those verses you’ve been learning about in Sunday school?”
“You mean from the Book of Acts?” Ethan asked.
“That’s the one. Do you remember what they did at the end of Acts chapter two?”
“Something about the apostles and eating bread.”
Dad laughed. “The Bible says that after the 3,000 were all shiny and new with the Holy Ghost, they kept their relationship with Jesus alive through study, prayer, fellowship – that’s the part where the bread comes in – and listening to what the apostles had to say.”
“Oh, yeah. I remember now. Is that why we do that stuff?”
“That’s right, Ethan. Without these things…well…we’d be as useless in our walk with God as a sports car with no motor.”
Wrap Up
James said in his letter to the saints of God that faith without works is dead. In other words, salvation is not a one-time event, but a lifetime commitment. We need to put feet to our faith. This happens when we strive to follow the apostles’ teachings, take time to pray, and spend time with God’s people.
These keep us connected to Jesus. These also help us from going cold in the Lord.
