Proverbs 10:25 When the whirlwind passes by, the wicked is no more, But the righteous has an everlasting foundation. (NKJV)
Jump Start
“Little pig, little pig, let me come in."
"No, not by the hair on my chinny chin chin."
"Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in.”
I bet it didn’t take you more than a second to figure out that quote from the famed nursery rhyme “The Three Little Pigs”. The only house the mean old wolf could not blow down was the last one made of bricks.
In Matthew 7, Jesus tells a parable about a wise man and foolish man who each built a house. The foolish man built on the sand. When the floods and winds came, the house fell. On the other hand, the wise man built his house on the rock. Because he built on a solid foundation the winds and rain could not knock it down.
Today's Devotion
The lamps in the living room burst to life. “Ah! Finally. The lights are back on,” Susan’s mother announced. Susan snuggled up against her mom on the couch close to the fire just as the back door flung open. In marched Susan’s father, brushing snow off his coat sleeves.
“Whoa! It’s cold out there. The snow’s piled up over the cars,” he said.
“They got the electricity back on,” Susan said.
“That’s good. I saw the electric company out there fixing the line that had fallen because of the ice. Too bad they can’t do anything about the tree limb that fell on the Thompson’s roof, though.”
“Oh, no! Are the Thompsons alright?” Mom asked.
“I went to check on them but found out from Hank next door that they’re in Florida at Mary’s sister’s house.”
“Well, I’m just glad everyone is safe. That was a pretty bad winter storm.” She rose from the couch. “Now that the power is back on, I’ll go make us some hot chocolate.”
“None for me, thanks,” Dad said. “Hank’s over there tarping the Thompson’s roof. I told him I’d help him out after I checked on you two.”
Susan clutched his coat. “Don’t leave.”
“What’s wrong, baby?” He sat beside her and pulled her close.
“I’m scared. The wind…the lights going out...what happened to the Thompson’s house. It all has me scared.”
“Listen, this house has weathered many storms worse than this. It’s one of the reasons your mom and I bought this place. What did you and your mother do when the storm got its scariest?”
“We prayed,” Susan replied, wiping her eyes.
“That’s right. Because Jesus is stronger than any house. All the bad things that happen in this world are like that storm. They can blow and blow and try to frighten us. But we don’t need to fear. And you know why?”
“Because Jesus protects us,” Susan said.
“That’s right. Even when things get bad, we’re going to be okay. Whatever storms come our way, our lives are built the Rock call Christ Jesus.”
Wrap Up
In follow-up to Jesus’ parable about the two houses in Matthew 7, Jesus alluded to a better foundation in Matthew 16. Jesus said in verse 18 that upon this rock, He will build His church and the gate of hell could not prevail against it. Jesus is our sure foundation. If we build our lives on Him, we can endure any of life’s storms.
The enemy may try to frighten you with his threats like the big, bad wolf in the story, “The Three Little Pigs.” But when you put your trust in Jesus, God keeps you safe from his attacks.
