Focus Verse

Proverbs 8:3-4 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? (NKJV)

“Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight. Though you make the sky glow so bright, in human hearts God shines His light."

In 2001, amateur astronomer John Bortle published a scale used to measure the brightness of the night’s sky. This scale ranges from Class 1, which are the darkest skies visible from Earth, to Class 9, which are skies saturated by light pollution like in big cities. The darker the sky, the brighter the stars appear from Earth.

According to the Bortle Scale, some of the darkest skies where you can see the full majesty of the stars exist in Big Bend National Park in Texas, Death Valley National Park in California, and Canyonlands National Park in Utah. These areas are so free of artificial light pollution, a witness can see the shadows cast by our own galaxy, the Milky Way.

Observing such grandeur can make us feel so incredibly small. Yet, that’s not how God sees it.

In today’s story entitled, “More Precious than Diamonds,” Lucas is reminded of our importance to God.  

Today's Devotion

Warmed by the campfire, Lucas peered up at the night sky.

His dad followed his gaze. “It’s amazing isn’t it?” he asked.

“Yes, sir,” Lucas replied.  “The sky is so clear out here.  I can see all the stars.”

“When I was your age, I used to go camping with your grandpa out here. We’d look for the Little Dipper, the Big Dipper, and the Orion Belt. It was so peaceful.  We’d fish and explore all day, then just sit around the fire, eating s’mores and staring up at the stars.”

“Pops talked about that. He’d say that God flung the stars like diamonds against black velvet.  I miss him,” Lucas said.

“Me, too.  He’d also say that while God made all of this, these were not His most precious creation. There was something more treasured by God than these diamonds in the night sky.”

“Oh, yeah? Like what?” Lucas asked.

“We are. To God, His greatest masterpiece is humankind. I never really understood that until the day you were born. Then it all made sense.”

Wrap Up

Ask most parents and they will say that the most precious things in all the world to them are their children. Our Heavenly Father feels the same way. First John chapter 3 verse 1 states, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God.”

God’s love is evident all around us. The most important evidence of His love is in the promise of eternal life that comes only through His Son, Jesus Christ. John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

You are more than star dust. You are a child of the Most High God!
