Focus Verse

Acts 2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne. (KJV)

Jump Start

"I see many great things in your future. And for $9.99 per minute, I can tell you all about it."

There are a lot of people out there who say they can read your future. Most of them are con artists and scammers. Or, worse, worshippers of evil spirits. The future is known only to God. That said, God does speak to certain people about future events. These people are known as prophets. Sadly, a few of them who profess to hear from God are false, too.

Thankfully, the Bible is filled with prophecies. These are meant to prepare God’s people for what’s to come. In particular, the Old Testament foretold the Messiah who would deliver His people from their oppression. We know Him as Jesus Christ.  His coming was prophesied to be in two parts. The first time He came as a lamb to be sacrificed for our sins. At His second coming, He will rule and reign as King over all the earth.

Today's Devotion

Madison peered through her new telescope into the night sky. She set her sights on the glowing surface of the moon.  “Wow, I can really make out the craters, Dad. Look.”

Her dad bent toward the eyepiece. “That is something. This is an awesome view of the Sea of Tranquility. That’s where the astronauts were to have landed in 1969.”

“Wouldn’t it be cool to have a telescope that could see into the future?”

“I hadn’t thought about it,” Dad replied. “Scientists say that the images that come from distant stars and galaxies are like looking into the past. That’s because of the time it takes for their light to reach us. But the future? That is a mystery. What made you come up with that?”

“I was just thinking about how God created the Universe. Then I got to thinking about all the prophecies in the Old Testament about Jesus. It’s like they could see into the future.”

“Well, only God can see the future,” Dad said. “But He did speak to people known as prophets who foretold things to come. God did this to prepare His people for what lay ahead. There are still many prophecies in the Bible that have not yet come to pass.”

“Oh, yeah. Like what?” Madison asked.

“The second coming of Jesus and the great tribulation, for starters. We should study them sometime. But I really like to read about the prophecies that proved Jesus was the Messiah. There are at least three hundred of them. That would be an interesting study, too.”

“I would like to learn about them all.”

“Consider it done. We can talk about them in family devotion time. Now, do you want to see something really cool?” Dad repositioned the lens of the telescope. “Let’s check out the rings of Saturn.”

Wrap Up

There is one thing we can be certain of. If God gives someone a prophecy, it will never contradict His Scripture. Peter said that we have a more sure word of prophecy. No prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation. In other words, it did come from man’s intellect, but God’s. Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

The Bible may paint a bleak picture about the future for wicked people, but heavenly wonders await God’s beloved. We just need to hold onto God’s unchanging hand.
