"Um, hello. Would you like to come to our church? Here’s a flyer. Okay, bye.”
Yep, that was me. When I was a kid, our church used to go door to door handing out flyers for upcoming revivals. I helped, but I felt a little intimidated. Not Greg, Paul, and Danny. These three young men would invite anyone with a pulse to come to church. And many came and found Jesus. I looked up to these guys for their boldness and passion for Jesus.
To understand their passion, you’d have to understand their stories. God had brought them a mighty long way. This caused them to want to share their testimony with others so that they can find out for themselves just how good Jesus is.
Today's Devotion
“Oh, no,” Peter gasped, clutching Landry’s arm. “We need to get out of here.”
Landry yanked his arm free from Peter’s grip. “What’s gotten into you, man?”
Peter leaned into Landry’s ear. “It’s Jeffrey.”
Landry attempted to turn back toward the hallway when Peter spun him around. “No! Don’t look. He might see us.”
“Why are you so afraid, Pete?”
Peter stared blankly into his face. “Why do you think, Landry? Or have you already forgotten that he promised to beat you up if he saw you again. Why did you have to talk to him about Jesus, man?”
“He got a little angry, I’ll admit. But I doubt he’s going to beat me up just because I told him that Jesus died for his sins.”
“Well, I don’t know. He is a bully,” Peter said. “And that’s what bullies do. Or haven’t you heard? Bullies beat people up.”
“You’re acting ridiculous,” Landry said. Just then, Landry felt a tap on his shoulder. Peter’s face turned white. Landry slowly turned around and came face to face with the dreaded Jeffrey.
“How’s it going, Jeffrey?” Landry asked, unfazed. “You having a good day?”
“What’s it to you, preacher boy?” Jeffrey spat.
“No reason. Listen, about yesterday. I hope I didn’t offend you. I’m not sure what you believe. Sorry if I upset you. That wasn’t my plan.”
Jeffrey’s face softened. “It’s cool. To tell you the truth, I don’t really know what I believe. But you got me thinking. Let’s just say I wouldn’t be mad if you told me more about Jesus.”
Peter’s jaw dropped. Landry cast his friend an I-told-you-so glance.
Wrap Up
One of the things that the disciples prayed for in the book of Acts was boldness. They faced opposition on every hand telling others about Jesus. And God gave it to them in a big way.
In our theme verse, Moses came to a place of decision. Would he follow God’s commandments, or would he bow to the king of Egypt? Because He had a reverent fear of God more than for the Pharaoh, he stepped out in faith. When he needed courage, God gave him boldness.
It takes boldness to stand up for what you believe. Pray for courage. But always remember to stand in the place of love.
