Ephesians 2:12 That at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. (NKJV)

Jump Start

Come on in. Make yourself at home. You’re part of the family.

Milton Hershey, the Chocolate King and founder of the Hershey Company, and his wife, Kitty, could not have children. They decided instead to help other kids in need. In 1909, they established the Hershey Industrial School in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The institution became a boarding school for orphaned children and those with impoverished parents.

Since its establishment, it has helped thousands of unparented and needy kids. What a wonderful way to turn a tribulation into a blessing.

Today's Devotion

Most days, Claire found every excuse she could to go to Vickie’s house after school. From the time since her parents died, she had been shuffled from one foster family to another. Some were better than others.

Claire met Vickie at school. Their teacher teamed them up for a special project. They soon became fast friends. Vickie went to church, and she had invited Claire to come, but her foster parents did not approve.

One particular day, Claire became overwhelmed by sadness. She missed her mom and dad and even her little brother so much. Since the accident, Claire never felt she belonged, or was loved, except when she was at Vickie’s house.

Later that day, Vickie found Claire on a park bench near her house, weeping. Vickie sat beside her friend and wrapped her arm around her shoulder. “What’s wrong, Claire Bear?” Vickie asked.

“Just missing my family,” Claire replied.

“Come on,” Vickie said, pulling her up from the bench. “I have a surprise for you.”

A few minutes later, they arrived at Vickie’s house. Vickie’s mom and dad greeted them at the door. They ushered Claire into the room Vickie’s mom used for sewing. The sewing supplies had been cleared out, replaced by a new bed, a dresser with a mirror, and a desk. A huge bouquet of balloons hung from the bed post.

“What’s this?” Claire asked.

“It’s your new room, Claire,” Vickie’s mom replied. “It took some doing, but you’re going to be living with us now.”

Claire started to cry. Vickie pulled Claire into a tight hug. “Welcome home, sis.”

Wrap Up

One of the biggest debates in the early days of the church was whether or not this promise of salvation was for non-Jewish people as well, often referred to in Scripture as Gentiles. Paul explained that because of Jesus’ sacrifice, God welcomed everyone into His family who received Jesus into their hearts. Because of the cross of Christ, we have access to these precious and eternal promises of God. This privilege makes the church the most inclusive group of people in all the world.

Do you feel blessed to be a part of God’s great, big family?
